Why sunshine and vitamin D are needed for a healthy mouth teeth and gums

The British summer is proving to be massively disappointing again, but we have had some sunshine over the past few days so you really need to get out there and enjoy it.  Everything seems better when the sun is out, people are happier and everyone smiles more.   But did you know how dependent we are on the sun for our physical health?

Various studies have highlighted the benefits of Vitamin D on our mental and physical health;  from boosting our mood, to reducing blood pressure, improving fertility, helping skin complaints and reducing the risk of some cancers.

Sunshine and vitamin D are needed for a healthy mouth teeth and gums.

Sensible exposure to the sun can greatly improve our oral health prospects.  Vitamin D is often referred to as the ‘Sunshine Vitamin’ because it is made naturally by our bodies when exposed to the sunshine.  90-95% of our vitamin D intake comes from our exposure to the sun.

  • Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium which is essential for healthy and strong teeth and bones.
  • Vitamin D keeps muscles strong.
  • Vitamin D is needed by the immune system so that it can fight infection and viruses.
  • A deficiency in vitamin D could lead to tooth decay, tooth loss and gum disease.

One dental study found that cavities were greater in children living in areas of the UK that had lower than average sunshine hours.

It is not possible to get the required amount of Vitamin D through our diet but including the following foods in your diet will help –

  • Oily fish
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Some fortified breakfast cereals (but please check the sugar content on these).

So the message is if the sun is out then get out there and soak up some rays.  Do, however, always be careful in the sun, don’t go out at the hottest time of the day, always wear sun protection and keep yourself hydrated (water is great for your mouth and teeth too).
Finally your oral health is dependent on a good mouth hygiene routine.   Always brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day and include regular flossing in your routine.
