Tooth Rescue Mission

Why You Might Need a Root Canal Treatment

Think about a “rescue mission” for a tooth that would otherwise have to be pulled. A root canal is a common procedure and here is the breakdown of what actually happens.

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed, root canal treatment may be required to save the tooth.

You usually need a root canal for two main reasons:

  • Infection:
Bacteria from deep decay, leaking fillings, or cracks in the tooth can enter the pulp, leading to infection and sometimes an abscess at the tip of the root.
  • Trauma:
A knock to a tooth can damage the nerve supply, causing irreversible inflammation and persistent pain.

Root canal treatment carefully removes the infected or inflamed tissue, disinfects the root canal system, and seals the space to prevent reinfection, allowing the natural tooth to be preserved.

Does it hurt?

Actually, root canals don’t cause pain, they relieve it. Thanks to modern anesthetics, the procedure feels very similar to getting a standard filling. Because we are removing the damaged nerve that is causing you distress, most patients feel an immediate sense of relief once the pressure is gone.

Root Canal Treatment Results

A successful root canal therapy allows you to keep your natural tooth. It functions exactly like your other teeth, maintains your jawbone structure, and prevents surrounding teeth from shifting. Once finished, the tooth functions as it should, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with total confidence.
