New Year’s Dental Health Resolutions

It’s the beginning of January and the phrase ‘New Year, New You, hangs thick in the air. According to popular statistics, around a third of British people will set themselves New Year’s resolutions and around 60% of adults will fail to keep their resolutions for more than a month.

Why not arrange a consultation with our Smile Concepts team who can suggest treatments that will help restore your smile and boost your confidence.

At Smile Concepts we don’t think that people should set themselves up to fail, resolutions should be achievable and we’d like to see them become a way of life for you rather than a flash in the pan. So here are six suggestions for dental health resolutions that you will hopefully still be following this time next year.

  1. Floss or TePe (interdental brushes) every day. This might sound like a big commitment but regular cleaning in between your teeth with floss/TePe is essential for good oral health. Brushing alone won’t keep plaque from building up on your teeth. If you’re not in the habit of cleaning in between your teeth daily, the New Year is a great time to start.
  2. Stop smoking. This is one of the biggest things that you can do to improve your oral health and your smile. Smoking doubles your risk for gum disease, oral cancer and tooth decay, plus it doesn’t give you the freshest breath and causes staining of the teeth. When you’ve kicked the habit and are happy that you are a non-smoker you might like to consider our teeth whitening treatments.
  3. Cut out the sugar. An obvious one, but so important. As well as the benefits to your weight and health cutting down on the amount of sugar that you consume will help to prevent the build up of bacteria in the mouth, these bacteria thrive on sugar and cause tooth decay.
  4. Drink more water. Staying hydrated is so important for your physical, mental and your oral health. As your saliva dries up bacteria forms in your mouth so staying hydrated throughout the day, drinking water during meals and swishing water in your mouth is recommended. Water washes away sugar and acidity left behind from food; both are leading causes of tooth decay. Next time you reach for a sugary drink or fruit juice, switch it for a glass of water, it will be good to your mouth and will help with weight loss, your digestive system and give you clearer skin.
  5. Visit your dentist regularly. If you do need to cancel an appointment don’t forget to re-book it. If you are looking for a dentist; all our new patients undergo a new patient assessment, this takes approximately 40 minutes and includes a discussion with your dentist about your requirements, a full extra and intra oral examination, oral cancer screen, two digital x-rays and reports, intra-oral camera pictures and a fully estimated written treatment plan.
  6. Smile more. As the saying goes ‘Smile and the world smiles with you’. A warm friendly smile can open up new friendships and opportunities; however, if you are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth this is easier said than done. Cosmetic dentistry could be the answer; we have a number of ways of correcting your smile and our most popular treatments are tooth whitening, clear braces, porcelain veneers, crowns, bridgework and cosmetic dentures.
