Six Top Dental Care Tips for Summer Holidays

Take care of your teeth on holiday and avoid a trip to the dentist on your return

Here are a few top tips for keeping your mouth, teeth and gums healthy whilst on holiday.  A good dental care routine both at home and abroad will help to avoid any unwanted trips to the dentist.

Dental check-up

Make sure that you have recently had a check-up before you jet off on holiday.  Better to spot any problems than having to deal with them whilst you are away.

Don’t forget your toothbrush!

Depending upon where you are going it may be difficult to pick one up if you forget yours.  Either way, you don’t want it to be your first job on arrival.

If you do find yourself without a toothbrush – use a clean face flannel placed over your finger, ideally with some toothpaste on it.  The rough surface of the cloth will be more effect at removing sticky plaque.

Make water your #1

Water will keep you hydrated which is important for saliva production, it will rinse food particles and debris from your mouth , and it is a much better alternative to sugary drinks or alcohol.

Limit your snacking

Chances are that you will eat more on holiday and ‘graze’ throughout the day.  Sticking to three meals a day will limit the time that your teeth are under attack.  This includes sugary and alcoholic drinks

Protect your lips

Make sure that you regularly apply sunscreen to your lips.  Prolonged exposure without protection could lead to oral cancer.

Take a spare pair

If you wear dentures don’t forget to pack your spare pair.  Believe it or not, it is quite common to lose dentures on holiday.  More often than not this is caused through bouts of sickness and dentures disappearing down toilets!

And…

Make sure that you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Always have your own valid travel insurance.  Policies vary greatly, so check your cover and excess details before you travel.  Keep receipts for any claims you need to make.

Consider our Denplan Essentials Monthly Membership Scheme, included in the plan is emergency dental treatment both at home and abroad. We offer plans for adults and children and a family discount is available too.
